Prioritise Community Descriptions
Rust
When I did my survey of communities a month ago, I noted a small number with no description. That should probably change.
If we rely on community descriptions for other functions, then it's important, maybe imperative, to have useful, fleshed-out descriptions. So I'm proposing a few initial changes, and hoping that there can be some useful discussion around other possibilities.
First, prevent descriptions from being blank.
Second, maybe set a minimum character count.
Third, ask people to name some broader related categories. Note: not 'choose' categories, as from the site list; but list some words that can be searched on.
Fourth, ask people to give some background as to why they created the community, what they hope for. It's the kind of thing that would go into an introductory post.

The maximum number of characters should be higher in the description and rules fields IMO. Separate feature request, but feels related so I thought I`d mention it 🙂

Excellent idea. Perhaps adding some proprietary hashtags in the community description could help boost searchability (eg. #catscom or some such) and help encourage their use. Some communities and users already do this (Road and myself to name two).

Ideflex Rust – Also potentially helpful to community creators/admin (and future searches) may be some prompts in the description box on the creation page such as:
- (Community name) is for sharing _______
- This community is a place to _______
etc
It may encourage creators to have a more fleshed out description.

Road yes! The less left up to chance, the better. Prompts for relevant hashtags would be beneficial also.

Road thanks for that addition. I could see that being useful in these and other ways. A prompt like 'what words would you like people to search on to find your community?' could be helpful.

Rust Good prompt. A similar interface to the current hashtag search popping up as well when they start typing “words” might be good.

+1 to this, especially requiring a description as mandatory. As more and more people join the site it needs to be as easy as possible for people to find the right places to view and post comment.
